About Fort McDowell
The Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation is a federally recognized tribe. Its reservation was created by executive order on September 15, 1903, and covers about 24,680 acres in Maricopa County. The Verde River runs north to south through it. It borders Fountain Hills to the west, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community to the south and the Tonto National Forest to the north and east. The Nation is governed by its own elected Tribal Council and has its own police department.
The Nation is known for defeating the proposed Orme Dam in 1981, which would have flooded more than half the reservation, a victory it celebrates every November. Its enterprises include:
- We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort, which opened its current casino in 2020
- We-Ko-Pa Golf Club, with the Cholla and Saguaro courses
- Eagle View RV Resort, with 150 sites above the Verde River
- Fort McDowell Adventures, with horseback rides, wagon rides and UTV tours
- A tribal farm that grows alfalfa, pecans and citrus

Locked out in Fort McDowell?
Emergency lockout service runs 24/7. Visitors to the resort, golf club, RV resort and the Verde River are a long way from town, so a locked car can end a day out. Call (813) 712-0832 with where you are and where you're parked. For cars, Scott opens the car but doesn't make or program car keys. Before he opens a home, Scott asks for ID or proof that you live there.
If a child, pet or anyone at risk is locked inside a car, call 911 first. Arizona heat makes a closed car dangerous within minutes. More on emergency lockouts. More on car lockouts.
