What GSA containers are, and why certification matters
GSA-approved security containers and vault doors are built and tested to federal specifications for storing classified material, and each carries a GSA approval label. The combination locks on them must meet Federal Specification FF-L-2740, the standard for high-security combination locks. The Kaba Mas X-10 and Sargent and Greenleaf 2740B are both locks of this type.
Federal Standard FED-STD-809 sets out how GSA-approved containers and vault doors may be opened when locked out and how they may be repaired, so that they keep their approval. Work done outside those rules can cost a container its approval. That's why agencies and contractors look for technicians trained and certified for GSA work.

Locked out of a GSA container? What not to do
A locked-out GSA container is stressful, especially when classified material is inside. Avoid making it worse:
- Don't drill it or force it. FED-STD-809 limits how an approved container may be opened. Forced or improper entry can cost the container its approval.
- Don't call a general locksmith without GSA training. Make sure whoever opens it is trained and certified for GSA work.
- Do keep the container secured and under your facility's controls until the technician arrives.
- Do write down the manufacturer, the container class from the GSA label, and the lock model if you can see them.
