How time locks work

A vault door usually has combination locks plus a time lock. The combination proves who's allowed in. The time lock decides when. Once the time lock is set, the door stays locked until the movement runs down to the set opening time, even for someone with the combination. That protects the vault overnight, on weekends and on holidays.

Time locks are precise mechanisms, and a failed time lock can keep a vault closed when the branch needs it open. Regular service keeps them reliable.

Converting vault locks from mechanical to electronic

Many older vault doors still use mechanical dial combination locks. Converting to electronic locks gives a branch:

  • Individual user codes instead of one shared combination
  • Audit trails that record each opening
  • Time delays that make a robbery harder
  • Faster openings than dialing a combination

Scott completed Bank Vault Electronic Conversion training through the ALOA Security Professionals Association and SAVTA in April 2025, and holds dormakaba factory certifications on electronic safe locks. See Scott's certifications.

Signs a vault door or time lock needs service

Call before a small problem keeps the vault closed on a business day. Common warning signs:

  • The combination dial feels rough, gritty or takes several tries to open.
  • The handle is hard to throw, or the bolts drag as they move.
  • The door has started to sag or binds as it swings.
  • A time lock doesn't hold the time it was set for, or the movements are past their service interval.
  • Electronic locks show low-battery warnings or reject valid codes.
  • Staff have started working around the vault's security, like leaving it on day lock longer than they should, because the locks are a hassle.

What to have ready

  • The vault door manufacturer and model, from the plate on the door if there is one
  • The lock and time lock models, if visible
  • What's happening, and since when
  • Branch hours and any security procedures Scott needs to follow on site

Common Questions

Do you drill and service safe deposit boxes?

Yes. Scott drills and services safe deposit boxes.

What does a time lock do?

A time lock keeps a vault door from opening until a set time, even if someone has the combination. Banks use them so the vault can't be opened overnight or on weekends.

What is an electronic vault conversion?

It's replacing a vault door's mechanical combination locks with electronic locks. Electronic locks can add individual user codes, time delays and audit trails that record each opening.

Is Scott trained on vault work?

Yes. Scott completed Bank Vault Electronic Conversion training through ALOA and SAVTA in 2025, Time Locks training through MBA USA in 2021, and is a Lockmasters-certified GSA Authorized Safe & Vault Technician.

Do you work with credit unions as well as banks?

Yes. Scott works with banks, credit unions and other financial properties.

Our vault won't open this morning. What should we do?

Call Scott at (813) 712-0832 right away. Emergency service runs 24/7. Have the vault door make, the lock and time lock models, and what happened when you tried to open it ready when you call.

Do you only work on bank vaults?

No. Scott also opens and services safes, installs electronic safe locks, and services GSA-approved security containers and vault doors for government agencies and contractors.

Can you service vault doors in older buildings?

Tell Scott the vault door's make and approximate age when you request a quote, and he'll tell you what's involved.
